Since there are only 3 pumps in the B system of the unit and 2 pumps are in operation, if the BB/3 pump cannot be handled immediately for standby, the B system has no standby pump and there is a great potential production hazard. After learning about the situation, Huang Yongxi, head of the operation area, and Liu Junrong, the equipment worker, arrived at the scene to study and solve the problem.

The two men repeatedly started the pump for trial operation inspection. After checking the faults one by one, the two men unanimously concluded that the packing seal of the pump was leaking, causing the pump to be unable to empty and pump the quantity. The maintenance personnel were required to replace the packing.

As the maintenance personnel slowly removed the packing of the rear axle of the pump, Huang Yongxi and Liu Junrong joined the maintenance team. They quickly removed the packing gland of the front axle of the pump, hooked up the three packing with iron wires, then turned to the rear axle of the pump, and also hooked up the three packing. Liu Junrong ran to the warehouse and found two cans of grease. Huang Yongxi scooped up the grease by hand, smoothed the six packing strips full, then pressed the packing strips round by round, and tightened the packing gland.

After the loading was completed, Huang Yongxi directed Mai Yu to contact an electrician to send electricity. Soon, they heard the gas being discharged from the exhaust port at the pump hanging box. Two or three seconds later, the exhaust gas was entrained with water, and the outlet pressure of the pump rose slowly. Mai Yu quickly put on the hanging box, stopped the exhaust of the pump, and adjusted the water supply pressure.
